Time for some turkey....

While I am in New Zealand, I don't seem to forget the holidays from home. In Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving in October...I don't know why it is different from that of our American counterparts but the occasion is the same. Now that exams are finished and everyone is in a lot better mood, we decided to host a Thanksgiving dinner tonight at our house. Since this the number of Americans surely out numbers that of us Canadians (plus I live with a Blue Devil) the excitement over having Thanksgiving has been quite high. The problem with hosting a festive event here has to do with our friendly gobbler...Mr Tom Turkey. So these birds really aren't that popular here in the land of the Kiwi. I don't know if they aren't popular because of the sheer price tag ($40 bucks for a 10lb Turkey) or they are situated at that price because people don't like them...hmmm another chicken and egg situation I leave you to ponder over. Well we are going to have all the trimmings since everyone has gotten quite excited: giblet stuffing (check), sweet potatoes (hopefully check..They have been difficult to track down), cornbread (check)...Ya I am pretty sure we have everything covered other than football (or hockey, I am Canadian!).

On a different note I defended my thesis the other day and I was scared shitless. It is quite intimidating having to present all the work you have done for the past year and let some experts critique you and slam your research. I got quite scared before hand...I began to doubt myself and think that they are going to see through me. Its weird, I feel like sometimes the more I learn and the more I know, the less I actually know. I don't know how this contradiction works but sometimes I would like to go back to age 12 when everything seemed easy and I felt like I knew everything. Hmmm no I wasn't arrogant...Wow Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" just came on the radio. I always forget how good this song is. The best line is "like 2 lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year".. Anyways I read some few things today I'd like to share

1. The annual turkey eating contest was on today. The "Black Widow" ate a 10lb turkey in 12 minutes...That is crazy. The weird part is she is only 105lb. I always think of competitive eaters as either a huge fat guy or some crazy Japanese man. However, breaking the mold of traditional eaters, Sonya "Black Widow" Thomas is the #2 ranked competitive eater. I really wonder how they train...She is going to have to eat a lot all the time to practice but being so small she must be bulemic. Ya...The Black Widow must be the ultimate binge and purge.

2. There looks like there is going to be a no confidence vote happening in the minority Canadian federal government. While this will cause for a general election sometime in the new year I really don't think that it is going to change the government. The Liberal hold on Ontario really isn't wanning and Stephen Harper, leader of the Conservatives, is way too right wing for most people. Consequently, this vote will result in another minority led Liberal government. Yup, you heard it here first all the way from the land of the Kiwi.

3. Sucker....The first batch of X-Box 360 looks like has glitches and is freezing up on everyone. While I kind of want one, I am going to wait and see what the new Playstation is going put out. The PS3 apparently is going to have a little more under the hood. Hmmm its a tough call though, you can't go wrong with Microsoft. Even though I hate them, they seem to dominate everything they do but Sony has been great. I think that I really shouldn't think about it since I don't play my PS2 much right now anyways.

4. TO isn't coming back this year...For some reason I like the guy. I don't know, the flash, the arrogance really should be hated. But for some reason I really wish I had the balls to do that. In any respect, his antics look like they are done for the season. All he will be doing for the next few months is bitch and whine...hmm I guess nothing will change.
